Loose Photos from Dean Elsworth Vaubel and Dorothy (Johnson) Vaubel

(mainly from Benton and Tama Counties, IA)

Dean Elsworth Vaubel (1915-1997) was the son of Oliver Charles  Vaubel (1891-1939) and Anna Mabel Shafer (1893-1973).  He married Dorothy Berniel Johnson (1919-1985), daughter of Charles G. Johnson (1886-1975) and Dessie Amber Walker (1891-?).  As usual, the female, Dorothy, probably collected and stored these photographs of the extended Oliver Vaubel family over time.  But after her death, Dean he preserved the photographs, and upon his death, the photos came to his nephew, Larry Stephen Pierce.  The photos were scanned and presented on this web page.  Dean also inherited a the large number of Milne photos preserved by his aunt and uncle, Lyle and Mary Lou (Gordon) Vaubel; these are presented on another web page: Loose photos from Lyle Andrew Vaubel & Mary (Gordon) Vaubel (mainly from Benton and Tama Counties, IA).

Numbering:

Each photograph has been numbered sequentially, having Milne as a prefix, e.g.,  Milne 001.  They are not necessarily in chronological order.

The album Loose photos from Lyle Andrew Vaubel & Mary (Gordon) Vaubel (mainly from Benton and Tama Counties, IA) comprise images Milne 001 through Milne 138, as well as a number of miscellaneous photos, letters and documents that were found after numbering, and so have received the designations of Milne 269 through Milne 313

The album Loose photos from Dean Elsworth Vaubel and Dorothy (Johnson) Vaubel (mainly from Benton and Tama Counties, IA) comprise images Milne 139 through Milne 285.

Identification:

Many of the photos have a caption or identification written on the back.  When there is no identification, I have sometimes been able to identify a subject from other photographs that are identified.

Date:
  c.1930's.

  148

Milne 148: Photographic print, sepia-toned, probably gelatine, ~5x7", mounted on a yellowish-tan card, ~8x10".  The print appears to be a contact print, judging from the amount of detail.  The card was originally ~8x10, but about 1" of the bottom margin has been torn off.

Photographer:  Professional or talented amateur, in that the contact print indicates that a 5x7" camera has been used.  Such a large format camera would not generally be in amateur hands in the 1920's.

Subject:
Occupational photograph of the process of threshing.  A thresher separates grain (usually wheat, but also rye or oats) from its stems or stalk.
In this photograph, from left to right:
1) a steam-powered tractor (at the far left side of the photograph), presumably pulling a hay wagon (out of frame),
2) a wagon pulled by horses, waiting its turn to be placed in the threshing line,
3) a wagon in the threshing line, whose load is being drawn into the thresher,
4) the thresher (the wagon having a wooden construction on it).  The thresher consists of a) an extension towards the left that conveys the grain-laden stalks from wagon 3 up into the thresher, where it is worked by b) the threshing mechanism until the grain is separated from the stalks; c) an extension towards the right, conveys the denuded stalks up into a pile of hay 20 foot-high; the grain collects at the bottom, where it is transported up d) a ~15 ft. high metal chimney-like duct; a chute at the end of the duct conveys the grain by gravity into:
5) a horse drawn wagon (at the far right side of the photograph).

Few farmers had their own threshers.  Only an enterprising farmer with means would build, or have built, the relatively expensive thresher.  At harvest-time, farmers would contract with the the thresher-owner, probably for a flat rate or perhaps for a percentage of the price realized for the grain, to process their grain.  He would stay until all the grain was threshed, one to several days, then move on to the next farm, farm after farm.

Dean Vaubel's maternal grandfather, Elmer Elsworth Shafer, the inventor, owned a thresher - probably the one pictured here.

The same thresher is shown in Milne 073.  Yet another photo, Milne 071, shows a thresher of a slightly different design.

The family in front of the thresher is: left to right: Dean Elsworth Vaubel (1915-1997), an unknown tall, thin woman, the tot: Helene Mae Vaubel (1919-2003), Anna Mabel (Shafer) Vaubel (1893-1973), and Ellis Kendall "E.K." Vaubel (1914-1996).  Separated off to the right is Oliver Charles Vaubel (1891-1939).  The tot appears to be about 2-3 years of age, which, considering her December 14 birthday, makes the date of the photo fall of 1922.

Date:
  about September 1922.

  149

Milne 149: Photographic gelatine print, ~3½x5", mounted on a thin card, ~5x7".

Photographer:  Candid, probably taken by a professional photographer employed at a night club or banquet.  The couple would be given a ticket when they leave, to be redeemed for the photograph at a later date.

  150

Milne 150: Probably a print using printing out paper; a contact print, ~5x7", mounted on a dark gray card, ~7x9".  It has a slight error in cutting on the lower right.

The upper image is tilted, printed as the negative was taken.  It also a slight error in cutting on the lower right.

     T
he lower image has been corrected for the tilt, perspective and contrast.

Photographer:  Unmarked, undoubtedly by an amateur photographer.  A professional would have produced an image that was not tilted.

However, one family related to the Milnes that lived in Minnesota was the family of Clarence Leslie "Pat" Blakely (1889-1964) and Bessie Mae (Shafer) Blakely (1894-1970), the daughter of Elmer Elsworth Shafer (1863-1939) and Ann Elizabeth Gordon (1872-1970).  The Blakelys are in Martin County, MN in the 1920 census, where their first three children were born.  The Blakely children were: Herbert (1915), Gordon (1918), Leonard (1921), Roland (1925), and Darlene (1928).  These would have been the first two.

Comparison with an identified photo of the Blakely family (Iowa 2000 Roll 3 IMG0008) shows that these boys are indeed Herbert Burton Blakely (1915-2008) and Gordon Keith Blakely (1918-1998).

Unknown.  This photo is unmarked.  Assuming that he is from the Milne or Shafer family, and comparing with other photographs having identification from the World War I era, he appears to match fairly well with photos of Clarence Ray Shafer (1891-1968), but a military record (except for a draft registration) was not found for him.  In fact, due to the need for farmers during the war, the only Milne/Shafer to enter the military seems to be Earl Fredrich Vaubel (1895-1989), who was in the army.

The two cabinet cards, Milne 180 and Milne 181 are from photographs far from Iowa, namely Norfolk, Nebraska and Cheyenne, Wyoming.  Charles could have taken a trip, but farmers generally do not travel.  More likely is that these photographers traveled around the mid-west, taking and printing photos using a portable darkroom.

Milne 186: Printed cabinet card-sized, ~4¼x6½", Funeral Card.  In the late nineteenth century, it was common to print cabinet photo-sized funeral cards, commemorating the life of a person taken from the family.

Photographer (Printer):  Unmarked.  The generalized printing in gold may have been pre-printed in the thousands or even available for purchase, while the white printing was done locally and specifically printed for this funeral, the sentiments probably having been chosen by the survivors.

Photographic gelatine print, ~4x5½", mounted on an off-white cabinet card, ~4¼x6½".

Photographer:  Studio portrait; the card is imprinted: "J.L. Newcomb, artist, Garrison, Iowa".

Subject:
Inscribed on the back: "Carrie Shafer Smith".  Carrie Redda Shafer (1865-1891) was the daughter of George W. Shafer (1838-1911) and Antoinette Bronson (1840-1905).  She married Ernest C. Smith (~1865-?) in 1888.  They apparently went immediately to the Dakota Territory just about the time when the territory was split and admitted to statehood as North and South Dakota (1889).  No children are recorded for their short, three year marriage prior to her death in the South Dakota.

Date:
c.1885; this photo is part of a photo of the entire family, (lower photograph) certainly made before she was married.  It was probably reprinted (with the rest of the family removed) after her death.

  Mabel

  Bessie

Milne 196:
Photographic albumen print, sepia toned, ~3x4", mounted on an off-white, textured mat, ~4¼x6⅛".

Photographer:  Snapshot; the mat has been stamped in purple ink: "C. A. Shafer, Cheyenne, Wyo.".  The C's in the stamp look almost like O's.  This stamp of photographer, or printer, is certainly a relative, given the spelling of Shafer, and is likely Clayton Allen Shafer, who is in the Wyoming census from 1910-1930.

Subject:
The back of this photo is inscribed: "Ray [left], Lee [back], Bessie [right], Mabel [front]".  These are the first four children of Elmer Elsworth Shafer (1863-1939):  Lee Earl Shafer (1889-1954), Clarence Ray Shafer (1891-1968), Anna Mabel Shafer (1893-1973), and Bessie Mae Shafer (1894-1970).  The mother of the first three children was Anna Mabel Backer (1868-1893).  The mother of Bessie was Ann Elizabeth Gordon (1873-1900).

Identification:  Mabel is recognizable as a toddler from her many photos in this collection.  The long, thin face of Ray can be seen in the left boy (see Iowa 1 017).  By elimination, Lee must be the other boy, partially occluded in the back, and Bessie must be the other girl, on the right.

Close-ups of Ray, Mabel and Bessie are shown at the left.

Date:
c.1897; Mabel appears to be about 4 years old.

Image Strip:  Images of Anna Mabel in approximate order of increasing age from left to right.  See MISC 071 for discussion.

Milne 197: Photographic print, probably gelatine, sepia toned, ~4x6", mounted on a cabinet card, ~4¼x6½".  There appears to be another photo pasted onto the card before underneath this one.

Photographer:  Experienced amateur or professional photographer, unmarked and unknown.

Subject:
Unmarked.  This might be a school portrait of the Tilford Academy in Vinton, Iowa, which school Anna Mabel Shafer (1893-1973) attended.  If this photo was indeed taken about 1910, she would be about 17 years old, and may be the young woman shown in the detail photo.

Date:
  c.1910.

Image Strip:  Images of Anna Mabel in approximate order of increasing age from left to right.  See MISC 071 for discussion.
